2014 Learner of the Year

CWU Member announced as 2014 Learner of the Year

On Tuesday 18th November 2014 at the 7th Annual Scottish Union Learning Conference in Dundee, Alasdair MacLean, a Communication Workers Union (CWU) member who is a postal worker at Glasgow Mail Centre in Springburn, Glasgow awarded the Scottish Union Learning Annual Learner of the Year award for 2014. Alasdair has progressed from introductory computing classes and digital camera courses to complete his ECDL Essentials and ECDL Extra (ongoing) courses, which were delivered by The Trade Union Education tutors, especially June McLean who has worked with Alasdair throughout his journey. June said “Alasdair is a real inspiration to everyone in the class, including the tutors. Everyone is so proud that he is receiving the annual award, he thoroughly deserves it”. He has had to overcome personal challenges brought about by his Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and is a real advocate for the idea of Lifelong learning. The ECDL exams are time constrained and Alasdair struggled to complete the exams in the time given. The tutors applied to British Computing Society (BCS), the awarding body, for extra time for Alasdair. This was approved, and an extra 15 minutes is now available should he require it. Alasdair said: “I really enjoy the classroom sessions and working with my work colleagues. The help and support I have received from the ULRs, the class colleagues and especially the tutor has been brilliant. I can’t thank the CWU and The Trade Union Education Centre enough for giving me this opportunity.”
